Road congestion in Buenaventura: an early 2026 marked by constant disruptions

High Port Activity and Lack of Truck Parking Areas

One of the main contributors to congestion is the shortage of designated parking areas for heavy trucks. While waiting for authorization to enter the port under the appointment-based access system, many vehicles remain parked directly on roadways, forming long queues that extend for several kilometers along the district’s access routes.

Notifications issued to operators for parking violations have not addressed the underlying structural issue, as trucks continue to accumulate on internal roads and nearby logistics zones. As a result, the corridor remains under constant strain, with reduced traffic flow even during periods of lower demand.

Rainfall and Recurrent Road Emergencies

Weather conditions typical of Colombia’s Pacific region have had a direct impact on mobility. Throughout January, heavy rainfall triggered landslides, fallen trees, and flooding, reducing visibility and forcing partial and full closures across different sections of the corridor.

On January 12, during the Epiphany holiday return period, a fallen tree at kilometer 12 of the Cali–Buenaventura highway brought down a power line, leading to a complete road closure. Controlled traffic intervals were later implemented, but delays persisted for several hours.

Accidents That Intensify Existing Congestion

These challenges were compounded by multiple traffic accidents recorded during the month. On January 5, a vehicle plunged into a ravine on the Buga–Buenaventura road, resulting in fatalities and temporary closures. On January 6, a collision between two heavy trucks in the Loboguerrero area caused an initial full closure and vehicle queues stretching several kilometers.

On January 9, a truck transporting timber overturned in the Citronela sector, reducing traffic to a single lane and affecting both inbound and outbound traffic to Buenaventura for several hours. These incidents illustrate how, in an already congested environment, any disruption has immediate ripple effects on corridor mobility.

Protests and Blockades in Strategic Areas

Community demonstrations have also affected traffic conditions. Road blockades in areas such as La Portada al Mar and other strategic points have forced traffic diversions, increasing vehicle load on already saturated routes.

On January 18, an accident involving a motorcyclist and a heavy truck in the Plan de las Vacas sector led to additional closures and congestion along the Buga–Buenaventura highway, reinforcing a pattern of frequent disruptions along this critical trade corridor.
